The Bourne Club is pleased to be able to offer individual coaching lessons from Gary Hales, a licensed Level 2 Squash Coach.

An all-round sportsman at school, Gary's main sport was football where he played at schoolboy level for two professional clubs. It was not until 1978, at the age of 16 that Gary first picked up a squash racket. Then, whilst studying in Salford and Cardiff, Gary was introduced to team squash, representing both Universities for several seasons.

 

At the age of 23 he joined Cardiff SRC's third team but soon progressed to their first team and eventually became the S. Glamorgan County Champion in 1993.

 

Gary represented and captained his County Men's Team and Men's Over 35 Team for several years. He was a regular member of the Welsh B Team from 1991 and achieved his highest Welsh Ranking of number 7 in 1995.

During his years in Cardiff Gary developed his coaching skills and was a Junior National Coach for 4 seasons, under the direction of Chris Robertson, the Welsh National Coach.

 

Gary's other major achievements include the following:

• Wales Over 35's Champion 1999 and 2000
• Wales Over 40's Champion 2003 and 2005
• Represented Wales in 23 International matches at Over 35's and Over 40's level
• Captained Wales Over 35 and Over 40 Teams
• 2001 World Masters (Australia): Finished 10th in Over 35's Event
• 2003 World Masters (Finland): Quarter-finalist in the Over 40's Event
• 2006 World Masters (South Africa): 5/8-Seeding in the Over 40's Event

Gary is currently the:

• Hampshire Squash Development Officer for England Squash, responsible for developing Mini-Squash in the County.
• Hampshire County Coach for the under 13 Boys Team
• Welsh Over 40's Men's Team Captain
• Active member of the Hampshire Squash Coaches Association
• Gary now coaches at clubs and schools throughout Hampshire and Surrey

Coaching Now Available at The Bourne Club

 

Gary is able to coach players of all ages and abilities both on a one to one or a group session.

 

The cost of coaching is £17 per 45 minute session, the following discounts are available for block bookings:

 

Block of 3 lessons = £48
Block of 5 lessons = £78
Block of 10 lessons = £150

Gary is also qualified to coach in the England Squash affiliated program of Mini Squash.

Mini Squash is a structured 3 level program aimed at ages 5 to 11 and offers an ideal introduction to the sport, covering co-ordination, agility and balance, fundamental in the athletic development of children. A Saturday session is currently being run for juniors aged 9 to 14 years at the Bourne Club. The 45 minute session starts at 4.00pm at a cost of £3.50 per child, per session. All equipment is provided free of charge. Further sessions will be arranged for younger children if there is enough demand.
